Summary

U.S.S. Constitution "Old Ironsides." In 1830, a newspaper notice that the Secretary of the Navy had condemned her to be destroyed aroused a college student, named Oliver Wendell Holmes, just turned 21, to write the famous "Old Ironsides." In 1834, she was rebuilt, the first vessel to enter Dry Dock #1 in Charlestown. Reconditioned again 1927-31 at cost of $921,108 with help of school children.
