eddying clouds ofdust, I could make out the figures of mycompanions moving slowly, apparentlyaimlessly, here and there. Our task for the moment was to searchout the unbranded J H calves. Since inranks so closely crowded it would be physi-cally impossible actually to see an animalsbranded flank, we depended entirely onthe ear marks. Did you ever notice how any animal,tame or wild, always points his ears inquir-ingly in the direction of whatever inter-ests or alarms him? Those ears are for themoment his most prominent feature. Sowhen a brand is quite indistinguishablebecause, as at present, of press of numbers,or, as in winter, from extreme length ofhair, the cropped ears tell plainly the taleof ownership. As every animal is somarked when branded, it follows that anuncut pair of ears means that its ownerhas never felt the iron. So now we had to look first of all forcalves with uncut ears.
