nd on very dark nightsone may even hear the flutter of vibrantwings but a few feet overhead. Nevertheless, something besides sightguides these travelers in the upper air. InAlaska a few years ago members of theBiological Survey on the Harriman expedi-tion went by steamer from the island ofUnalaska to Bogoslof Island, a distance ofabout sixty miles. A dense fog had shut outevery object beyond a hundred yards. Whenthe steamer was halfway across, flocks ofmurres began to break through the fog wallastern, fly parallel with the vessel, and ds-appear in the mists ahead. The power which carried them uner-ringly home over the ocean wastes, whateverits nature, may be called its sense of direc-tion. We recognize in ourselves some suchsense, though imperfect and easily at fault.Doubtless a similar but vastly more acutesense enabled the murres, flying from homeand circling wide over the water, to keepin mind the direction of their nests and re-turn to them without the aid of sight.
