land.Those in Aldeburgh are situated on highground on the road to Saxmundham, be-yond the railway station. The ground is 256 LITTLE JOURNEYS ABROAD. covered with gorse bushes; and in manyplaces are holes made by the wild rabbits,treacherous hiding-places for balls, andunder the bushes are the nests of themeadow-larks, who sing here all day longas we never had heard them sing before.The little club-house, where you can obtaintea, whiskey, beer, bread, and cheese whenhungry, is flanked by a tiny workshopwhere clubs are constructed. The sweetfresh air blowing down through the pinewoods is peculiarly soothing, and if theplayers are ever overcome with drowsiness,— as we were after an hour or two ofwalking, — we should not have been sur-prised to see them drop down and yield tosleep, on the ground near the furze bushes,or on the beach under shelter of an up-turned boat. IN GOLF-LAND. 259 best parts of the church, and there areremains of curious carvings in the poppy-heads which adorn some of the benches.The church is built of stone and flints.There are some interesting old tombstonesin the graveyard, and the peal of bells isvery sweet-toned. On the royal wedding-day the bells rang marriage-peals all daylong, and made cheerful music to unaccus-tomed American ears; and, again, when adaughter of one of the fishermen wasmarried, the bells rang out and the flagsflaunted across the village street just asthey had done for the wedding of thePrincess. I think the Church is firmlyestablished at Aldeburgh, and there is littledissent to contend with.
