positive tones of highafternoon of a summer day, and prefers the un-clouded sea. The parasol is coming to be almosta symbol of his aim, with its suggestion of glare and daintiness together. For,though his palette is usu-ally intense, he sees a deli-cacy in the fierce sunlightthat beats upon the sea-shore in August—that is,his color is sharply viva-cious. That his continuedpreoccupation with an un-muddied brush is not lead-ing toward heaviness in hishigh-keyed contrasts is wellsuggested by the gentlermood displayed in thepainting. Evening Light.Mr. Hassam, on the otherhand, is, perhaps, lettinghis assured touch take ontoo heavy a quality. Hehas no need to do so, as heshows in the characteristicIdyl with two nude figures.Among the landscapesMr. Weirs Corner oj theField, already referred to, is preeminent in its charm.It is one of the best things he has done.
