WASHINGTON (Dec. 10, 2012) Kate Morrand, archaeological conservator for the Archaeology & Conservation Laboratory at Naval History and Heritage Command, cleans artifacts recovered from the wreck of USS Huron, which sank in a storm off the coast of Nags Head, N.C. in 1877. Ninety-eight men died when Huron sank. The artifacts were removed from the wreck site without permission in the 1960s, and require considerable conservation treatment to stabilize them.
