Seen in the payload bay are the multi-purpose logistics module Leonardo and the lightweight multi-purpose experiment support structure carrier. Discovery will deliver 33,000 pounds of equipment to the station, including science and storage racks, a freezer to store research samples, a new sleeping compartment and the COLBERT treadmill. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Wearing special protective suits, workers remove the protective covering from NASA’s Deep Space 1 spacecraft in the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at KSC to prepare it for prelaunch processing. Targeted for launch on a Boeing Delta 7326 rocket on Oct. 15, 1998, the first flight in NASA’s New Millennium Program is designed to validate 12 new technologies for scientific space missions of the next century. Onboard experiments include an ion propulsion engine and software that tracks celestial bodies so the spacecraft can make its own navigation decisions without the intervention of ground controllers. Deep Space 1 will complete most of its mission objectives within the first two months, but will also do a flyby of a near-Earth asteroid, 1992 KD, in July 1999 KSC-98pc932

Summary

The GOES-R spacecraft is inspected after being uncrated and raised to vertical inside the Astrotech payload processing facility in Titusville, Florida near NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. GOES-R will be the first satellite in a series of next-generation NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites. The spacecraft is to launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket in November.
