Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, May 1916 - Highlanders, Gayly kilted, arrive in New York to spur British recruiting. Two hundred and fifty Gordon and McLean Highlanders brought Fifth Avenue to its street windowns to view the passing of the Scotsman as they swung down the thoroughfare headed by their bagpipers. They were the chief attraction of British Recruiting Week beginning July 16, 1917. A big rally on Friday night at Madison Square Garden wound up the weeks activities. Lord Northcliffe and James M. Beck were the principal speakers. Photo shows the Highlanders, marching through the streets of New York City on their way to the 71st Regiment armory at 34th Street and Park Avenue

Displays battle scarred old flag. When the Union forces made their triumphal entry into Washington at the close of the Civil War 65 years ago, Orlando Learned could not come because of a battle wound. But at last the Union veteran has been able to make a trip to the Capital, bringing with him his cherished 36-starred Union flag, which he obtained during a celebration of the fall of Vicksburg and later carried in into battle with him. The picture shows him proudly displaying it to Edward Hudgins, age 2, his great grandson, 1/31
