The inspiration for this painting is "The Faerie Queene", by Edmund Spenser from the end of the 1500s. The enchantress Acrasia is depicted in the 'Bower of Bliss' surrounded by handmaidens with a knight at her mercy.
The Faerie Queene frontispiece, title page
The epic poem The Faerie Queene was written by Edmund Spenser (1552 – 1599). The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590, and a second set of three books were published in 1596.
