Baltimore, MD. Strange as it may seem, many persons misspell or change the spelling of their names, from time to time. To forestall the difficulties which would ensue when Baer subsequently spelled his name Bear, the Social Security Board Records Office has set up several varieties of indexes for reference and to insure accuracy. One of these is the alphabetic code index. This is printed on flexible strips, each just wide enough for one line of type. They are printed automatically from the employee master card. The strips are in partially perforated rolls when they first are printed, as shown in the above photograph taken in the Records Office. The perforations allow strips to be separated at any point so that, for example, Abraham Abel's name may be inserted in proper alphabetic sequence between Aaron Abel and Adam Abel

Drying at top speed. Reeled away from the calendaring machine, the fresh stock rolls over towering drying racks shown here. Weighted tension bars keep the festooned sheet of new fabric taut and straight as it cools and dries. From the drying racks, the fabric travels quickly onto rolls of cloth where it is rolled onto reels small enough to handle. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Raw rubber cut into pie-shape. Delivery end of the cutter. The wedge-shaped hunks of rubber fell out on this dusting tray where they are covered with soapstone dust to prevent them from sticking back together again. Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Production. Aircraft. George "Randy" McCraw decorating a Vega Ventura bomber. Every ship that rolls off the line carries a cartoon aimed at the Axis. George came to work as a spray painter, then shifted to painting British insignia on sides of ships. He sometimes amused his fellow workers by drawing faces on ships during lunch hour, and was prevailed upon to put a big drawing on a ship for a special occasion. The idea took, and now George puts a gag drawing on each ship. The paint washes off with gasoline, but overseas gossip says these ships go into combat still bearing assorted Rudy Ostriches, Donald Ducks, Porky Pigs and a host of other cartoon characters
