Marie and Albert Kawalski. 615 S. Band St., Baltimore, Md. Albert is 10 and Marie 11 years old. They worked, with mother, last winter, shucking oysters for Varn & Beard Packing Co., Young Island, S.C. (near Charleston). Mrs. Kawalski did not have things represented to her correctly and she found that all the children that had fare paid were compelled to work for the company. Other smaller children worked some and went to school some. Maire and Albert have worked several summers in the berry, beans and tomato fields packing houses near Baltimore. Millie, 13 years old last summer. Ignatio, 9 years old last summer. Jo, 6 years old last summer. Paresse Family, 4 Fly St., Buffalo, N.Y. All three worked in the Albion Canning Factory in the sheds (Jo, only a little) on peas, beans and corn. Jo was too small to get husks off the corn so they stopped his working. Millie and Ignatio made 40 to 50 cents a day each, at 8 cents and hour because the work was slack. Returned to Buffalo the last of October. Went out the last of May, losing about 11 weeks of school time. Millie would not go to school when she came back because she was behind the rest of the class. Was found out by the C.O.S. in January and was reported to truant officer and sent to school. Location: Buffalo, New York (State)

Greenabaum's Cannery is considered one of the largest in the United States. A few years ago they canned 1,000,000 cans of peas in 4 days. This information was given by the bookkeeper of the Cannery. Helen is an orphan, who one month after death of her widowed mother, was adopted by the Hope family of Seaford, Del. This is her 2d season at Johnson's Hulling Station. Out of sixty working (only half were there) I counted fifteen apparently under twelve years old. Some three, four, and five years old were picking too.
