Contributors, almost always anonymous, have forwarded sums ranging from [$0.02] to $30,000 since the fund started in 1811. Only last week he received an anonymous contribution of $1,000. He is shown opening a crudely addressed envelope containing $2.00. Frequently the letters are addressed to President Roosevelt, 4-14-39

Air raid protection--what to do in your home. Plan to use one room in the house as refuge room. This should be a room in the lower stories, with as few windows as possible but with more than one exit. A basement is ideal if it has this latter requirement. Plan what you are going to do now. If the siren howls, go quietly to the place you have chosen as a refuge room. Take along plenty of warm clothing

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. The old and the new. At the right is pictured one of the new defense homes now under construction, while in the background is shown one of the apartment homes built for the defense workers during World War I. Where as many of the latter homes were disposed of due to private concerns after the war, it is expected that many of the new defense homes now being built will eventually become part of the overall slum clearance program. Others will help fill the urgent peace time need in America for low cost homes

America's petroleum industries pour out fuel and lubricants for the United Nations. A geology expert of one of the large oil companies U.S. displays two varieties of sand from an oil drilling district. The hand on the left holds dry, oil-less sand, while the one on the right holds sand rich and dark with oil. The latter oil-soaked sand, called "Simpson sand," is the goal of all seekers of oil and finding the sand in a test-boring indicates that is a well is sunk at that place the chances of "striking" oil are good. No longer do oilwell drillers in the U.S. rely on "hit or miss" methods of drilling for oil. Geologists make careful surveys of the surface of the ground to detect those geological characteristics which indicate the presence of oil deposits beneath. The industry's high efficiency has resulted in the production of enormous quantities of oil, a great part of which today propels and lubricates the planes, navies, and mechanized equipment of the United Nations' armed forces

It's unclear who erected the "Haunted Hotel" sign outside this long-shuttered old building in downtown Beaumont, Texas. The prankster may also be responsible for hanging the building's original vertical sign sideways. The latter identifies the structure as the "new" Rosemont Hotel, where rooms could be had for $1 and up. It was indeed new in 1893, when Beaumont was booming

P-29521 BW Range: 557,000 kilometers ( 346, 000 miles) The southern hemisphere of Umbriel displays heavy cratering in this Voyager 2 image. This frame, taken through the clear-filter of Voyager's narrow-angle camera, is the most detailed image of Umbriel, with a resolution of about 10 km (6 mi). Umbriel is the darkest of Uranus' larger moons and the one that appears to have experienced the lowest level of geological activity. It has a diameter of about 1,200 km (750 mi) and reflects only 16 percent of the light striking its surface; in the latter respect, Umbriel is similiar to lunar highland areas. Umbriel is heavily cratered but lacks the numerous bright-ray craters seen on the other large Uranian satellites; this results in a relatively uniform surface albedo (reflectivity). The prominent crater on the terminator (upper right) is about 110 km (70 mi) across and has a bright central peak. The strangest feature in this image (at top) is a curious bright ring, the most reflective area seen on Umbriel. The ring is about 140 km (90 mi) in diameter and lies near the satellite's equator. The nature of the ring is not known, although it might be a frost deposit, perhaps associated with an impact crater. Spots against the black background are due to 'noise' in the data.
