A typical street group in Kavadar, Southern Serbia. The mountain pony is an attentive listener to this conversation which has been going on for more than an hour, but as yet has taken no part. Maybe it's because he's tired having carried his master who holds the halter thirty miles over the mountains. The saddle he bears is Home:made with an iron frame and wooden trimmings. It weighs alomost as much as he does. But in addition he can carry two hundred pounds of A.R.C. supplies, and often does. It's the only means the American relief organization has of transporting its supplies to isolated villages in the mountains. A convoy of fifty of these animals are used by the R.C. every week to take supplies from its station in Kavadar to the outlying districts. The picture was taken in the market at Kavadar

"With all my worldly things I thee endow" means something in Albania. When an Albanian girl, no matter how poor, gets married, she brings with her a "hope chest", containing everything she owns. Here is shown a "hope chest" being carried to the bride's new home on a pack horse led by the "ushers" at the wedding. It's a most gorgeous affair of magenta and green and blue and yellow. And nowadays it's safe to assume that it contains some second hand clothing from America, distributed in Albania by the A.R.C

Has moved to town and remains temporarily off relief by selling his livestock. "What are my boys going to do? It's not a question of what they're going to do. It's a question of what they're going to have to do. They're not any up there in Congress but what are big landowners and they're going to see that the program is in their interest. As long as the government is paying the landowner more to let the land out than they make by renting it, they won't rent it."

It's a dirty shame and the government ought to know about these conditions and see what goes on. It's awful bad."

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – It’s a full house on the tarmac at the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida with the arrival of astronauts in T-38 jets, the “pathfinder” aircraft for space shuttle Discovery’s ferry flight and the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft with Discovery secured on its back. The astronauts are participating in the festivities related to the final departure of Discovery from Kennedy. The NASA C-9 pathfinder aircraft will fly about 100 miles ahead of Discovery to scout for the safest route between destinations. Its crew includes an SCA flight engineer who studies the weather patterns along the flight path to find a route free of rain and other turbulence. The carrier aircraft, also known as an SCA, is a Boeing 747 jet, originally manufactured for commercial use which was modified by NASA to transport the shuttles between destinations on Earth. NASA 905 is scheduled to ferry Discovery to the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17, and is assigned to all remaining ferry missions, delivering the shuttles to their permanent public display sites. After its arrival at Dulles, Discovery will be placed on display in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on April 19. For more information on the SCA, visit http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news/FactSheets/FS-013-DFRC.html.
