They slept in the sand-bagged shelter, and often had to be taken there through the day also when the place was shelled by the Germans from the sea. The picture shows Mme. Soothes anxious relatives of American citizens in China. Washington, D.C., Aug. 20. Worried citizens calling the State Department these days to inquire about the safety of relatives and friends in the China danger zone are connected with Mrs. Madge Blessing, in charge of the "Welfare and Whereabouts File," Divison of Foreign Service Administration of the Department. When an inquiry comes in for information about an american in the danger zone, Mrs. Blessing makes out a card with the name of the individual about whom the inquiry was made and that of the person calling. A cable inquiry goes to the American Consul in the area. A reply back to the State Department is usually received in a couple of days, 8/20/37
