Williams School - Brush, Colo. 7 children present out of 30 or 40 that are expected when beet work is over. It is Oct. 27, seven weeks after school opened. The school is well equipped, the teacher has a degree (A.B.) and one other teacher in this district (out of five rural teachers) also has the same degree. Salaries run from $65 to $75 a month, 9 mos. school. The prairie-wagon home of a family of itinerant beet workers, now camped near Ft. Collins, Colo. Street family. The children 7- 8- 10- and 12 work steadily and I saw the tiny girl pulling beets after sunset on the following Sunday, and they had not yet finished. The father told me "We got squeezed out of the mountains," one of the neighbors said they has been chased out because they wouldn't send their children to school. Living on the edge of Ft. The total enrol[l]ment will reach 15 or 17 after beet work is over. Sept, 6, school opened with 12 pupils. Low attendance will continue for several weeks. The teacher, Miss Allison, says that out of 8 months of school, many of the children will get only four months schooling on account of beet work. Pulling and Topping Beets. A sample of "Economic Need". Part of the family of Jacob Walker, a prosperous beet raiser near Sterling. His 6, 8 & 10 yr. old children are kept out of school and worked, in spite of the fact that he owns 225 acres of land here worth several hundred dollars an acre. Father, mother and seven children work. Walker moved here from Neb[raska] 8 yrs. ago. They work hard and continuously. See also photos 4033-4 and 5. 34 children present at the Grant School, Ft. Morgan, Colo., five weeks after school opened, out of a possible 200 that will be here when the beet work is over. They will overflow, this year, into a special school being prepared for them. Mrs. Bell, the Principal here has taught these beet children for years and has watched the effect of the work.
