At the bottom of thexystus are the remains of a room or saloon 12 or 14 feetsquare, > paved with mosaic, and supported by six columns.In the wall are three niches for statues, the middle one ofwhich has a vaulted summit, in which remains of mosaic andshells may still be seen. It would be difficult to say to whatpurpose this building was applied. Some call it a triclinium,but it has not the usual shape of that apartment, and it musthave been at a considerable distance from the kitchen. To the east of the Street of Mercury, two narrow streetsrunning parrallel with it from the walls of the town to theStreet of Fortune are intersected in the middle by anothernarrow street running from west to east, thus forming four * Breton, Pompcia, p. 272. 392 POMPEII. insulae resembling those already described. It was discovered about the timewhen the first edition of this work was preparing for thepress, in October, 1830, and excavated in that and the two HOUSE OP THE FAUN. 393 following years.* It abuts on the north side of the Streetof Fortune, just beyond the Temple of Fortune, on the otherside of the way. On the pavement in front of the entranceis inscribed the word Have (ave), in letters of coloured marbleincrusted in ojpus Signinum. The pro thy rum is divided intotwo unequal portions by a doorway and two steps, thesmaller portion being towards the street. The secondportion ascends towards the atrium, and is paved with smalltriangular pieces of variously-coloured marbles. At the topof the walls on either side are miniature representations instucco of the colonnade of a temple. The walls of theatrium were also covered with stucco painted to resemblemarble. The impluviuni, lined with marble, occupies themiddle of the area. On a little base on one of its sideswa
