description

Summary

Zaman Shah Durrani in Durbar North India, probably Lahore Gouache and gold on paper Inscribed: 'Portrait of his highness king of king Zaman Shah Padishah Durrani, may God prolong his realm and reign. Shown seated on the Peacock Throne, Zaman Shah Durrani, the Afghan ruler, seized the old Mughal capital of Lahore for three years, 1798-1801. Presumably this portrait came about as a result of Zaman Shah's access to the Mughal court artists' workship. Although the actual portrait of Zaman Shah Durrani is a mask-like and immobile, the animals in the carper are exceptionally lively. The gestures and poses of his many female attendants echo the rhythm of the carpet design.
