Worthington Whittredge (1820–1910) was an American landscape painter, best known for his paintings of the American West. Born in Springfield, Ohio, he began his career as a portraitist before turning to landscape painting. He travelled extensively in the United States and Europe and studied with prominent artists such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Cole. Whittredge was a member of the Hudson River School, a group of American landscape painters influenced by Romanticism who sought to capture the beauty of nature in their art. He is known for his panoramic views of the American West, particularly the Rocky Mountains, which he painted during his travels in the 1860s and 1870s. Whittredge's work is characterised by its luminous quality, attention to detail and romantic vision of the American landscape.
