Walter Langley (1852-1922) was a British artist born in Birmingham. He is best known for his paintings of working class people, particularly fishermen and their families in Cornwall. Langley was a member of the Newlyn School, a group of artists who settled in the fishing village of Newlyn in Cornwall in the late 19th century. His paintings often depicted the harsh realities of working class life, but also showed moments of tenderness and beauty. Langley was a skilled painter of light and atmosphere, and his work is characterised by muted colours and a soft, hazy quality. He continued to paint until his death in 1922.
