He was a member of the Amsterdamse Joffers, a group of artists and intellectuals who were active in Amsterdam in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Witsen was known for his paintings of Amsterdam and his photographs of traditional Dutch life. He also wrote poetry and essays on art and culture. He was a member of the Tachtigers, a late 19th-century Dutch literary movement that was known for its opposition to contemporary social norms and its emphasis on individualism. He was also a member of the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. He died in 1923.

Willem Witsen was a Dutch artist born in Amsterdam on 1860. Witsen came from a distinguished Amsterdam family. Between 1876 and 1884 he studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (State Academy of Fine Arts). He was a painter, but also became a famous graphic artist. In 1885, with two art lovers, he founded the Nederlandse Etsclub, a society for etchers. In the 1880s, Witsen began painting gritty cityscapes of Amsterdam, Dordrecht, and London. He was also a painter of still lifes and portraits. Like George Hendrik Breitner, Witsen became known for the paintings he made, probably beginning in 1890.
