Volunteers and staff members with the Hampton Roads

description

Summary

Volunteers and staff members with the Hampton Roads Naval Museum are pictured touring building one aboard Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The original building opened in 1830 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was designed by renowned architect John Haviland, who was the architect for Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Missouri State Penitentiary among others. The tour took the group to the 5th floor, which housed the original operating theater and morgue, the dungeon which provided cold storage in an era before electricity, and other historic spaces. The tour was provided by Head Librarian Jane Pellegrino. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is the US Navy’s oldest continuously operating hospital, and is situated on the Portsmouth, Virginia waterfront across the Elizabeth River from the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.
