Venus attired by the Graces. (BM 1868,0808.6915)

description

Summary

A fat ugly woman sits squarely on a stool, in stays and petticoat with clumsy ungartered stockings. Three women, grotesquely ugly, advance towards her, one with a cap, the other with a petticoat, a third with a chamber-pot. On the ground are combs, hair-tongs, tankard, pin-cushion, fan, and garters, one inscribed 'Set thy thoughts on things above'. Said to be a satire on 'some vulgar fashionable'. 8 December 1800
Hand-coloured etching.
