Johann Michael Rottmayr (1654-1730) was an Austrian painter who specialised in frescoes and altarpieces in the Baroque style. He was born in Laufen, near Salzburg, and trained in Salzburg and Rome before settling in Vienna in 1686. Rottmayr's work is known for its dramatic use of colour, light and movement, as well as its grand scale and ornate decoration. He worked on many important commissions during his career, including the decoration of the Hofburg in Vienna and the Church of St Charles Borromeo in Vienna. Rottmayr died in Vienna in 1730.
