USS Hornet (CVS-12) refuels a Rothesay-class frigate in July 1967

description

Summary

A Rothesay-class frigate, or an Australian River-class destroyer escort, is refueled by the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVS-12), in July 1967. Units centered around the Hornet and the Royal Australian Navy aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne (R21) participated in exercise "Sea Dog", in July 1967. The exercise included the protection of a convoy from attaking carrier aircraft and from submarines. Note one of Hornet's 127 mm/38 guns in the foreground. The the absence of a pennant number on the frigate could identify the ship as an Australian River-class destroyer escort, which had the pennant number painted on the bows.
