Toll Gavel and Walkergate Corner c.1900 (archive ref PH-4-8) (24775716534)

description

Summary

The name Toll Gavel possibly derives from the street whereby tolls were once collected and formed part of the medieval High Street. Running between Saturday Market and Butcher Row, its origins date back to at least the 12th century, and in Elizabethan times was sometimes called Kings Street. It once formed part of the main bus route to Hull, even with its narrow width.
Walkergate is recorded as early as 1329 and was the street where, many years ago, the Walkers did their fulling and milling from where it derives its name. It was also used to cross the Walker Beck. Walkergate, now known as ‘Old Walkergate’, starts at the corner of Sow Hill Road and continues in a southerly direction until it reaches the junction of Toll Gavel and Butcher Row.
