Summary

To... the Marquis of Lansdown... Chesterfield packet, Captn. Robt. Lea Jones rescuing the crew of a ship that was sinking...
Hand-coloured aquatint depicting the Chesterfield, a British Post Office packet, probably built in Falmouth. She was captured by a privateer in 1799 and disappears from Steel's List in 1800. Her captain was accused of remaining ashore to supervise the building of his new packets. Inscribed "To the most Noble the Marquis of Lansdown. This plate of the Chesterfield packet, Capt. Robt. Lea Jones rescuing the crew of a ship that was sinking, is by permission dedicated by his Lordship's obliged and obt. servant John Jeffryes". There is a painting of the same subject by Pocock exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1794.
