fSUntcn ant (Ehrtj. Simon Kenton was one of the most noted rangerain the early history of Kentucky. As a hunter andIndian fighter, he had few equals, being brave,enterprising, determined and skilful. Simon Girty,also a famous woodsman, was the friend of Kentonsyouth. Girty, from unknown causes, became a rene-gade, joined the Indians, and led many of theirattacks upon the white settlements. Being active, of a strong constitution, fearless inthe extreme, and at all times ready to join their warparties, he soon became very popular among his newassociates, and a man of much consequence. He wasengaged in most of the expeditions against the fron-tier settlements of Pennsylvania and Virginia,—always brave and always cruel,—till the year 1778.when occurred an incident which, as it is the onlyDright spot apparent in the whole dark career of therenegado, shall be related with some particularity. Girty happened to be at Lower Sandusky this 452 THRILLING ADVENTURES.

SIMON GIRTT. year, when Kenton,—known at that period as SimonButler,—was brought in to be executed, by a pariyof Indians who had made him prisoner on the banksof the Ohio. Years before, Kenton and Girty hadbeen companions at Fort Pitt, and served togethersubsequently in the commencement of DunmoresExpedition ; but the victim was already blackened forthe stake, and the renegado failed to recognize in himhis former associate. Girty had at this time but justreturned from an expedition against the frontiers of KENTON AND GIRTT. 453 Pennsylvania, which had been less successful than hehad anticipated, and was enraged by disappointment.He therefore, as soon as Kenton was brought into thevillage, began to give vent to a portion of his spleen,by cuffing and kicking the prisoner, whom he even-tually knocked down. He knew that Kenton hadcome from Kentucky; and this harsh treatment wasbestowed in part, it is thought, to frighten theprisoner into answers of such questions as he mightwish to as
