Its primaryuse is that of a knife, and it is employed incutting to pieces the bodies of foes that areslain in battle. Still, though it was origi-nally intended as an implement and not &sa weapon, it is of so formidable a characterthat it is often employed in the latter capac-ity. As far as can be ascertained, this knifeis considered to be especially devoted to theone object of cutting up human bodies, andis never employed in any meaner work. As to clubs, they are of various shapes,the natives having no special form, but carv-ing them into any device that may suit thembest, and using different kinds of wood forthe purpose. The defensive armor of the Sandwich Isl-anders is generally a thick mat, which isworn in time of war, and is sufficientlystrong to save the wearer from the thrust of aspear or the stroke of a dagger, and can evengreatly deaden
