fteen feet long, and wereflanked by winged figures, and between them was aninscribed pavement slab of alabaster. At a second en-trance was a group designed to represent the expulsionof the evil spirit by the good deity. The rej^resentationof the bad spirit is hideous in the extreme. The mon-sters head is as frightful as it is fanciful. The ears arelong and pointed; the jaws are distended, and armedwith huge teeth. The body is covered with feathers;the forefeet are those of a lion; the hind legs terminatewith the talons of an eagle ; it has spreading wings,and the tail of a bird. It is pursued by a winged mandressed in fur, and bearing in each hand a three-forkedthunder-bolt, which he is represented as hurling againstthe monster, who had turned tow\ard him with an ex-pression of the utmost fury. Near the temple stood asolid block of limestone, representing the king in high-relief. It is, perhaps, the best specimen of Assyrian artyet discovered. The monarch is clad in sacrificial robes,
