The Colossi of Memnon. turies, the chief attraction which the site of Thebes afforded to the Roman visitor consisted of the twin Colossi of AmenophisIII., styled the Colossi of Memnon. The spectacle of these hugefigures on the west bank of the river, and the phenomenon ofthe plaintive note which issued at sunrise from the northernmostof the two, excited an interest in the Roman mind second only to the interest with which the Pyramids were regarded. 1 xvii., c. 813.

3V3 1» 2i LUXOR 255 After the city of Apollo, Strabo writes, is Thebes, or, as itis now called, the city of Zeus— That hath a hundred gates, each gate so vast,That ten-score men can pass with liorse and car. • As Houier says; and he speaks also of its wealth— Nor all the wealth of Thebes,Egyptian Thebes, where each house hath its store. 1 And others say the like, making it the capital of Egypt. Evennow the traces of its vast extent—it was eighty furlongs inlength—are apparent. The remains are chiefly temples, and ofthese the greater part were mutilated by Cambyses. The collec-tion of villages, where the present population live, lies partly onthe Arabian shore of the river on the site of the ancient city, andpartly on the opposite bank where the Memnonium stands. Onthis latter shore two colossal floures, each constructed out of asingle block of stone, stand side by side. One is complete, butthe second has lost its members from the throne upwards.
