PATRIOT PUB. CO. PREPARATIONS FOR THE MARCH TO THE SEA—ATLANTA, 18G-1 The soldiers sprawling on the freight-cars are one of the bo.lies of troops that Sherman was shifting—changing garrisons, and establishingguards, in preparation for his famous march to the sea. Below appears a wagon-train leaving Atlanta; but comparatively few wagonsaccompanied the troops on this movement. Everything possible was discarded and sent back over Shermans strong line of communica-tions. The soldiers personal effects were generally limited to his blanket, a pair of socks, and a piece of shelter-tent, although manydiscarded even the latter. Nothing was transported but ammunition, absolutely necessary commissary supplies, and grain for theanimals. All invalids and those incapacitated for bard marching were sent back, and the average company was less than thirty men.
