You may travelall over Europe, and find no such homes as are everywhere to bemet with in England. You have a sense of tranquillity, and thespots are favorable to thought. I love the pleasures of city life,and I know that art, science, intellect, literature, are in a greatmetropolis, — it is the rojiil exchange for the human mind. Iappreciate libraries and lectures, collections, galleries and mu-seums ; but still, when I enjoy the shade of venerable elms in afine old farm-house, on the banks of a river which almost washesits walls, and gaze out on the garniture of hill and vales, I amconscious of pleasure which London or New York cannot afford.What we sadly want, in our happy and glorious country, is to cir-cumscribe the beautiful, and learn the knack of creating ruralscenery on a small scale in our sequestered villas and cottages.
