ENGINEERS AND CONTRACTORS CONTRACT FOR THE WHITNEY COMPANY, WHITNEY, N. C. The contract for Whitney operations was signed on December 29, 1904, and work begun the followingmonth. Contract called for the construction of a straight Cyclopean masonry overflow dam, and 4 1 miles ofpower canal. The dam was 40 feet high and 65 feet wide at the base, and contained 163,000 cubic yards of graniteCyclopean masonry. It was designed for 15 feet flood and crest, was Ashler faced throughout, 2,900 feetlong including spillway, abutments and head gate structure; the spillway proper being 1,500 feet long. The 4 1 miles of canal, which was 14 feet deep below flow line, and 40 feet wide at the bottom, calledfor the excavation of 2 1 j million yards of earth and rock, and delivered at the power house a minimum flowof 1,425 cubic feet per second, at a total head of 129 feet.
