THE SOUTHERN PENINSULA. 137 LAKE ALGONQUIN. The name Algonquin is applied to the earliest body of waterin the Huron basin, after lowering occurred which made LakeErie and Lake St. Clair separate water bodies. This early Algon-quin lake seems to have begun with a southward discharge throughLakes St. Clair, and Eouge to Lake Erie for it was the successor ofLake Lundy. An outlet from Georgian Bay through the Trentvalley to the Ontario basin was, however, soon opened through reces-sion of the ice front in Ontario and being lower than the St. Clairit diverted the drainage eastward. Then as a result of differentialuplift in the northeastern part of the lake, including this outlet,the water level was raised in the southern part to a height sufficientto bring back the discharge to the St. Clair valley, and reestablishthe roundabout course through Lake Erie and over Niagara Falls tothe Ontario basin.
