Stephenson Family (Birthplace of the Locomotive)
Summary
Stephenson Family (Birthplace of the Locomotive), Oil on Canvas painting 137.5 x 121.5 cm
Robert Stephenson (1803–1859), the civil engineer, commissioned (for £350) an oil painting focusing on the achievements of his father, the engineer George Stephenson (1781–1848). None of Robert Stephenson's own achievements are depicted, but symbols of his life are, including his home Dial Cottage, Killingworth colliery, a waggonway with locomotive, miner's pick and a 'Geordie' miner's lamp. In the foreground are thought to be members of his family past and present, including Robert Stephenson.
