Garnet (ship)
S.S. Garnet was owned by the Humpybong Steamship Company and was brought to Brisbane from Sydney in 1884. Her first voyage from Brisbane to Humpybong was on the 28th August of that year and her period of service continued until 1900. Garnet was a small screw steamer of 50 gross tons, 86 feet long and with a 17 feet beam. Purchase price of the vessel was 3000 pounds and she had a speed of ten knots. Garnet left Birkbeck's wharf for Redcliffe every day, including Sunday. She took around two hours to reach Woody Point and became the creator of excursion steamer traffic in the district. Garnet had a life-span of 47 years which ended when she caught fire on the Williams River, N.S.W. on 12 March 1930.
