Summary
State prison. Gleason's Pictorial 1853. From the accompanying article: Has 554 cells, accommodating 600 prisoners (473 at present), and 33 officers and watchmen. Men and women, old and young, sick and well, can all be separated in different wings and different stories. "One of the best conducted establishments of this characters in the country." 313 are American, 170 are foreigners, 36 negros and 12 mulattoes. Eight have been sent to the lunatic hospital. 45 men are making whips at 50 cents a day; and the hammering of stone is recommended to be given up, because it is not remunerative.
