Probably, no place has been morebe-sketched and be-praised. Tourists, and would-be travellers—artists,and artists that would be—poets, and poetasters—have all joined in aa generous rivalry to celebrate its beauties; and, if they have notsucceeded to admiration, the fault most certainly was not in theirsubject. Historically speaking, the Isle of Wight is replete with interest fromthe earliest times to the imprisonment of King Charles in CarisbrookCastle. The Romans called the island Vectis, and, under that name, itis mentioned by Suetonius as having been conquered by Vespasian aboutthe year 43. It has been conjectured, and ingeniously supported, thatthe isle was once connected with the mainland, and separated by theviolence of the sea: hence its name.
