Summary

Stamp of Spain; 1964; commemorative stamp of the issue "Tourism"; The stamp motive shows the "Great Mosque" of Córdoba, which has a very moved history and which contemporary is classified as "cathedral minor". Erected was this building in 768 after the Umayyad Revolution from 750 as Muslim mosque for the new-founded Umayyad Emirate. Since 929 was this mosque also one (of several) independent headquarters of a Abd al-Rahman II in the Caliphate of Damascus and Bagdad. Under  al-Hakim II. (915-976, since 961 Calif) was this Mosque important expanded. During the Spanish "Reconquista" (= the time between 722 (Battle of Covadonga) and 1492 (Fall of Granada in Christian hands)) was this place re-conquered by the troups of King Ferdinand III (in the 13th century) and important expanded with new defensive structures.; In this time were for instance added an "Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianes" and a "Torre Fortaleza de la Calahorra". A bridge from Roman times over the river "Guadalquivir" connecting among others the centre of Córdoba with the Alcazar in North (inclusively the commercial centre of Córdoba), with the Calahorra-Quarter in the South, with the San Basilico quarter in West, and with the Calle de San Fernando in the East.; Since them, this building is called also "Mezquita-Cathedral de Córdoba".; Over 1000 years lived Romans, Visigotes, Jewishes, Muslims and Christians peacefully side-by-side.; On this place under the "Great Hall for Prayings" was located already in Roman times a Janus-temple since the 2nd century BC.; The main axis of the "Great Hall for Prayings" is a product of the 16th century (Renaissance-time). In 1523 began the decisive reconstuction under Don Alonso Manrique (...de Lara) (1476-1538) (against the hefty resistance of the than town concil of Córdoba but with support from the then Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, Karl V (which also was as Carlos I King of Spain) and in which a part of the 856 pillars from Jaspis, Onyx, Marble and Granite were removed and a Gothic church ship directly in the "Great Hall for Prayings" errected, during the main building was made more broadly and rebuilded in the style of the Plateresque. Completed was this rebuilding measures firstly in 1607 under the leading of the than bishop of Córdoba, Diego de Mardones (?-1624, it exist a figure from him in the cathedral).; In the time 1593 to 1664 was substitute the Muslim minaret of this mosque by a bell tower. As Karl V saw the results of his pronounce in 1526 shall he has said: "Ich wusste nicht, um was es sich hier handelte. Denn wenn ich es gewusst hätte, hätte ich nicht erlaubt, dass man Hand an das alte Gebäude legt. Ihr habt getan, was möglich war, etwas erbaut, was es andernorts schon gibt, und dafür habt ihr etwas zerstört, was einmalig in der Welt war.“ (= German for: "I don't knew, what it was about here. Because, if I would have knew it, I would have it permitted never, that to set their hands to this old building. You have done, what was possible and have something built, what exist already on an other place in this word and for that you have destroyed what was unique in the world.").; Well, be how it be, since 1994 is the old-town of Córdoba (inclusively the Mezquito-Cathedral) part of the UNESCO-World Cultural Heritage (National laws from 1885 (Spanish Historical Heritage) and 2007 (Heritage of Andalusia)) and belongs to the conservation list (SOC) of the UNESCO. In 2006, the Bishop of Córdoba, Juan José Asenjo, pronounced against a demanded re-moving of this building to an intercultural house of God. He caused his decision with the until to here lacking of an archaeological evidence that the mosque was errected on the fundaments of a Visigotic cathedral.
