hree feet deep, evidently blown out ofthe solid rock. Amid dense clouds of scaldingsteam the water shoots up periodically, an exquis-ite blue in hue, churned into dazzling foam, out ofwhich effervescent waves are flowing fast uponeach other to the ice-cold river below. Roundabout are great porridge cauldrons, throbbinglike steam-engines, and lovely sapphire-blue poolswith snow-white borders. Only a couple of milesfrom the native village of Tokaanu lies the laneum, under an avalanche of steaming mud, andevery soul perished. Higher up is the smokingpeak of Ngauruhoe, casting hot stones and asheswith violent explosions, and lighting by night thelovely face of Lake Taupo. Look down the walls of Ngauruhoes craterand you will see it literally incrusted with glitter-ing sulphur crystals, weirdly varied with opales-cent shades of red. Is it not strange that men, women, and children from the remotest cornersof the earth should come to so terrifying a regionin search of health ? Vol. XXXV.—63.

PICKING OR NICKING EASTER EGGS BY EVERETT WILSON There is an Easter custom among boys in andaround Philadelphia, and other parts of the coun-try of picking eggs. A boy will go over theeggs in the pantry (with his mothers consent, itis hoped), and, by gently knocking the ends onhis teeth, will select one or more of the strongest. Then he goes out among his playmates and soonis challenged, or he himself will invite anotherboy to pick. Before daring to risk this, each boy will try the others egg on his teeth and ifhe thinks his chances are good he will accept thechallenge. The boy challenged will then holdhis egg so as to expose only the very point, while the challenger lightly raps the egg with thepoint of his own until the shell of one or theother is slightly cracked. The eggs are then re-versed and the butts are picked in the sameway. The winner gets the broken egg.
