Slave shackle - Dutch East Indies
Summary
The shackling of slaves occurred mostly when they had to be moved, but slaves could also be put in irons by their owners or foremen as punishment or to prevent their escape. This slave shackle, of which only a portion is preserved, probably came from the Overtoom plantation
on the River Para in Suriname. At the time of the abolition of slavery in 1863, there were still 193 slaves working on this plantation.
