Seattle Electric Co workers with wagon, Seattle, ca 1900 (MOHAI 93)
Summary
In 1886, the private Seattle Electric Light Company installed the first Edison electrical system west of the Mississippi. Soon, a number of independent electric companies supplied power to local city residents and businesses. Many of these were later consolidated into the Seattle Electric Company. The city-owned Seattle City Light started in 1902.
