Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Scituate Light received by Henry Dearborn and Henry A.S. Dearborn in their capacity as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are letters and circulars received from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin regarding the acquisition of land for the lighthouse, the approval of a contractor's proposal for construction, and the appointment of Simeon Bates as the first lighthouse keeper. Also included are a copy of an Act of Congress authorizing and appropriating funds for the building of the lighthouse, and letters from the public recommending various individuals for the lighthouse keeper post.
