The previous USS Enterprise, CV-6, played a key role in the battle. Enterprise is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
