Summary

Remonstrance of April 2, 1832 against setting the gun house on the training field. "To the Gentlemen, composing the committee chosen at the town meeting on Monday, 5th Inst to report to the town on the subject of removing or erecting a gun house on the training field in Charlestown. Gentlemen, we the subscribers, citizens of the town, and some of us residing or owning real estate adjoining the training field in Charlestown, beg leave to present to the committee and through them to the town, their remonstrance against the removal of the gun house to the training field or erecting one on the same, and in this remonstrance we assure you the petitions and all our fellow citizens that we are not actuated by any unfriendly feeling towards them, or any disrespect for the Charlestown Artillery Company. We urge our remonstrance on the grounds of the recent expense which the town has been at in purchasing land to build a gun house one now occupied by the Artillery Company, tho we think it deserving some consideration. But we urge our remonstrance on the grounds of the annoyance of military operations in a populous neighborhood." [From slide 2] " . . . particularly of our artillery. The disturbance to the schools located there, to our families, particularly the sick, and depreciation of the value of our property and the destruction of our windows, etc. And if it necessary to remove the location of the gun house it is our ernest request that it may not be removed to the training field but that some other place may be selected and it is our request that this our remonstrance should be handed in and read to the town at the time the report of the Committee is laid before them. James Hunnewell, Ezra Glinmon, Saul C. Hunt, Joseph F. Tufts, N.A. Tufts, David Hoyt, George Pierce, E.P. Machwitin as agent for Osgood Fifield, Leonard Tufts, David Stetson"
