Puget Sound Naval Station, Bremerton, Washington, ca 1898 (MOHAI 6467)
Summary
In 1877, the United States Government began to study the idea of opening a naval shipyard at Sinclair Inlet on the Kitsap Peninsula. The area had a good harbor, a mild climate, and access to plenty of timber and coal. The government bought the land in 1891 and, over the next few years, built a large dry dock and ship refitting station. The towns of Bremerton and West Bremerton grew up around the naval station.
This photo, taken between 1897 and 1900 by Anders Wilse, shows the view from above the Puget Sound Naval Station in Bremerton, Washington. The large wooden house looking out over the harbor is an officer's residence.
