egated marbles. In front, sup-ported upon arches, is one of the double staircases givingaccess externally to the platform which surrounded the uppervomitories. On the right is a large quadrangular building,of which no vestiges now remain. It has an impluvium inthe middle, though it is thought to have been a public build-ing. Two inscriptions are painted on its walls: one in Latincharacters, conveying good wishes to Lucretius ; the other inGreek characters, with similar wishes to Valens. The espla-nade in front of the amphitheatre is planted with trees,among which are seen tents and wooden huts for the vendors ofdrinks and eatables. In the arena, on the seats, the platformand the staircase, in the surrounding esplanade, and even onthe walls of the city, are numerous figures in all the variousattitudes of the affray; some fighting, some flying, othersfalling dead or wounded (See Fiorelli, Gli Scavi di Pompei,Napoli, 1873, p. 145 : Giornale degli Scavi, Nuova Serie,No. 8).
