s also displayed some 170 POMPEIANA. acquaintance with architectural composition;but the whole is too precisely represented in theengraving. In the original, all the ornamentedparts are undetermined in form, though not incharacter: the figures, also, are sketches. Theborder is from a room ; the ground yellow, flowersalternately green and red. PLATE XXV. ViEW^ in the court of a house near the foregoing: thespace within the columns was open; around isa gutter for conveying the water from the roof.At the farther end is seen a niche: the wall ispainted, and this part was, probably, roofed.The door to the right of the niche is to theroom where the surgical instruments were found,whence the house had its name. To the left, butout of the picture, was the entrance through thefirst court. There was also a communication withthe parallel street to the right of the view, butnot seen. The unfluted part of the columns arepainted blue: the dwarf walls between red. Thetiles upon the walls are modern.
