BLOWING A HEAT IN A BESSEMER CONVERTER. Taming Steel with Fire. 133 seen a ladle filled to the brim and the slag drained off into asmaller ladle at the side. Then a giant traveling-cranepicked up the ladle and carried it off to one end of thebuilding. Now they are going to cast the ingots/ said Uncle Ed,pointing to some large boxHke molds about two feet squareand eight feet high. We watched the crane-man manceuver the ladle toposition over them, and then a stream of molten metalpoured out of the bottom of it into one of the open-mouthedmolds. As each mold was filled, a cover was placed over it.The molds were made of cast-iron, and I noticed that theyrested on little cars. These cars were coupled together tomake a train, which was pulled out into the yard by adinkey engine, as soon as all the molds had been filled. Itlooked as though the brightly glowing molds must surelytopple over, as they swayed along the uneven track andswerved around the switches. They looked top-heavy, eventhough
