Overland Indian Mail 1844 - Public domain engraving

An Illustrated London News engraving of a packet boat carrying the Indian mail (and passengers) from Alexandria to Marseilles. This use of the isthmus of Suez route (the Overland route) for mail and passengers transport to and from Europe, especially Britain, and India and the Far East increased considerably with the rapid expansion of steam navigation after the 1820s.
